What Does an Ombuds Do?
As a confidential and independent third-party neutral, the Ombuds can help you clarify concerns, become a more effective communicator, and successfully navigate any situation that arises during your time at South Texas College.
The Ombuds will:
- Listen to concerns in a safe and neutral setting where individuals feel respected
- Act as a confidential sounding board
- Assist in exploring options and researching resources
- Value diversity
- Explain College policies and procedures
- Teach conflict resolution skills and share best practices
- Mediate or facilitate conversations
- Help you to analyze the problem or concern
- Help identify options
- Make inquiries into a problem or concern when appropriate
- Help develop problem-solving skills so individuals will be better able to act on their own behalf in resolving conflicts
- Make referrals to other campus and community resources
The Ombuds will not:
- Advocate for either side of a dispute
- Require participation
- Conduct formal investigations
- Adjudicate/Make decisions
- File and/or write complaints or appeals on behalf of visitors
- Participate in any formal processes
- Give legal advice
- Get involved with non-college related problems or concerns
- Serve as an office of record or as an agent of notice for the College
- Disclose any identifying information without permission/consent
- Keep identifying records or formal written records
- Provide Therapy
Common Issues / Concerns:
- Possible violations of College policy
- Communication problems
- Academic policies or disputes
- Red tape in College procedures
- Misunderstandings
- Appropriate ways to frame and discuss issues
- Untangling a complicated situation
- Service issues, in the classroom or on campus
- Accessing other College resources
- Formal processes for resolving issues
- Other campus concerns
We can listen, brainstorm, explore, coach, and offer referrals, but you decide if and how to proceed. Raising concerns with us doesn’t initiate any formal action or process. You own the problem and the solution.
